During this week the topic of our Instagram/FB posts was Curious things about English words. If you have missed any of them, you can read them now :)
1 - OK
OK stand for zero killed. In times of war, that was how soldiers used to communicate that everything was fine.
2- Oh mylanta
If you watched the TV series "Full House" from the 90's or its new version "Fuller House" on Netflix you may be familiar with this expression. "Oh mylanta!" means the same as "Oh my God", but it's a way of showing respect to the ones who believe in God and don't see with good eyes the use of his name in a non-religious environment. Or it may be used by people who simply don't believe in God.
3 - Uber
The word Uber comes from German and it originally means above. It has been used in the English Language by Americans as a substitute for really or extremely.
4 - Favela
Do you know that the word favela can be used in English? Check its meaning according to Cambridge Dictionary: "a very poor and crowded área of a city in Brazil"
5 - Holiday
The word holiday comes from "holy day" which means "dia sagrado" in Portuguese. A holiday is a day that can be related to religion or not. On this day most people usually don't work. The next holiday here in Brazil is March 30th, also known as Good Friday.
6 - Caipirinha
Today is Rio's birthday and in its honor let's talk about one of the most popular drinks over here: caipirinha! There's no translation. Wherever you go it's caipirinha.
7 - XOXO
You have probably heard this before. It got more famous here in Brazil with the TV series Gossip Girl. XOXO is a way of saying goodbye at the end of an informal e-mail or a message, for example. It's said that O represents the arms of two people hugging each other and the X, kissing.
8 - WhatsApp
The name of the app came from the informal greeting "What´s up?" which means "How are things?"
9 - Spoilers
It´s very common to read in TV series and/or films post this word. Spoiler comes from the verb spoil, which means to be no longer good (food) or to destroy or reduce the pleasure of something. When there´s a #spoiler you know that if you keep reading you will know about some surprise of the story.
10 - TBT and TGIF
Another famous hashtag from social media is #tbt which stands for "Throw Back Thursday". To throw back is to bring something back, so on this day people post photos taken on a past Thursday that they would like to live again. TGIF is also really popular and it means "Thank God it´s Friday", the last day of the week and the beginning of the weekend.
