Falta pouco para o Halloween. Você sabe o que é esta festa?

Halloween, também conhecido como Dia das Bruxas no Brasil, é uma festa que acontece no dia 31 de outubro. Acredita-se que originalmente era uma celebração celta do festival de Samhain, quando pessoas acendiam fogueiras e vestiam fantasias para assustar e espantar espíritos. Estes retornavam para suas casas em busca de alimentos. Na véspera do dia primeiro de novembro (Dia de Todos os Santos), a Hallows Eve - hallow é a forma antiga da palavra holy (sagrado) e eve é abreviação de evening - era uma noite de vigília e oração.

Atualmente, a festa é fortemente celebrada nos Estados Unidos com decoração nas casas e crianças fantasiadas batendo de porta em porta brincando de "Trick or treat?"/"Doces ou travessuras?" Acredita-se que essa prática veio de uma antiga crença inglesa que acontecia nos desfiles do Dia de Todos os Santos. As pessoas davam comida - soul cakes - para os necessitados em troca de orações para seus familiares mortos.

Alguns dos símbolos do Halloween são: 

bat (morcego), 

black cat (gato preto), 

ghost (fantasma), 

Jack o´lantern (a famosa abóbora iluminada), 

skeleton (esqueleto), 

werewolf (lobisomem), 

witch (bruxa), 

vampire (vampiro).

MANY ou VERY? Como usá-los?

 Como os alunos trocam isso!! Mas é mais simples do que você pensa.

Usamos MANY antes de COUNTABLE NOUNS in the PLURAL form. Veja:

I have many books. 

Yesterday I met many students. 

Books e students são substantivos e estão no plural. MANY indica uma grande quantidade - muitos ou muitas.

Agora se eu quero dizer que algo é muito difícil ou muito grande ou muito qualquer coisa eu uso VERY. O VERY é sempre seguido por um ADJETIVO. Veja:

Some people think English is very difficult. 

Brazil is a very big country.

After that, I kept thinking about other phrasal verbs that are also useful so I have selected four of them for you.

MOVE ON > You've probably heard this one before. It's really used in English and we can listen to it in the song "We don't talk anymore" by Charlie Puth feat. Selena Gomez.

"To move on" is to leave a place (or situation) that you are staying and go somewhere else. In the song, the guy can't keep up with his life after the break up like the girl did. If a relationship is over, you should try to move on, to continue living your life. If you leave a job, move on! Go find another one. Moving on is part of life and our own development as human beings.

CUT BACK ON > It means to spend less, do less, or use less of something. For example:

If you want to buy a new bicycle, you should cut back on unnecessary stuff.

GET AWAY > This one can be used in several contexts and with different meaning but today we´ll focus on a U2 song that says “It´s a beautiful day, don't let it get away” In this example, it means to let the day escape, leave, go on without enjoying it. 

WIPE SOMETHING OFF > To clean someone or something by using a towel, one´s hand, etc.

Examples I wiped off the baby and took him out of the high chair.
